There’s nothing fun about being sick, but for a kid, getting your temperature taken and taking medicine is almost worse than the illness itself.

With that uncomfortable process in mind, health technology company Withings has developed a unique new children’s thermometer that is non-invasive and accurate.

While traditional thermometers are placed under the tongue, in the ear, or elsewhere, the new Thermo can scan a child’s forehead and provide readings from up to about a half an inch away from the skin.

Gone are the wrestling matches to get a child to stick their tongue out. Withings’ pen-shaped device is able to read the forehead’s temperature from the temporal artery with 16 infrared sensors.

Using an adjusted algorithm, Thermo offers users color-coded feedback to convey a child’s temperature range: green for normal, orange for elevated, and red for high. It also connects via Wi-Fi to an accompanying app to track temperatures and send measuring reminders.
