In a world where decked-out watches with eye-catching facets reign supreme, there is a voice of reason for those who don’t like big cases and crazy movements and complications. The answer for the simple watch seeker is Shinola’s Canfield Chronograph.

The Canfield debuted at Baselworld 2016 and doesn’t follow the trend of showing off its inner workings with a gap on the dial. Instead, it resembles the clock face of a 1950s diner with simple numbers and hands set on a deep metallic blue face with a lightning bolt above the Shinola label at the top of the watch face.

The stainless steel case measures in at 43mm, making it sizeable enough for a man’s wrist, and the simple design makes the Canfield very readable. The simplicity of the design is completed by a dark leather strap that helps contrast the watch face.

Canfield is also Shinola’s first timepiece featuring a top-loaded case construction. This is a technique that has all of the components loaded in via the front of the watch, resulting in a better view of the dial.

Shinola’s Canfield Chronograph is available for $850 online and at retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue.
