Daimler, Mercedes-Benz’s parent company, is working with its car-sharing subsidiary car2go and with Bosch to launch a pilot project aimed at developing self-parking cars that also return to various pick-up locations. The system of cameras and sensors will be tested first in car2go’s vehicle line.

Car2go utilizes smartphone technology to allow customers to order and pay for vehicle use. The new pilot program is a perfect match with car2go’s technological and connectivity background. Although similar technologies like smart cruise control, park assist and autonomous breaking capabilities already exist, they still require a human operator.

After recently cementing their partnership, the companies will begin the challenging task of creating intelligent infrastructure components like cameras and parking bay sensors, which are necessary for the vehicle to analyze a parking garage the same way a regular driver might and then select a spot. The end goal is for a car2go customer to simply order a vehicle to their desired destination and send it back after use. The new project isn’t just a concept either—they’re actively working to bring this technology to customers soon.
