The Gulfstream G500 successfully completed its first flight on May 18. The new jet took off from Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport in Savannah, Ga., where its manufacturer is based, and soared for more than two hours.

Both test pilots conducted a full examination of the flight-control systems and avionics in addition to testing a missed approach and go-around. Five Gulfstream G500 models are included in the new flight-test program to allow crews to examine all aircraft functions for the best possible passenger experience.

This newest Gulfstream model can reach speeds of nearly 680 mph and features a fully equipped cabin with enough room for 18 passengers, although it’s usually outfitted for 8 or 10, with a berthing fit for 8.

With a cabin measuring over 41 feet long, almost 8 feet across, and more than 6 feet tall and an interior pressure that never rises above that of 4,850-foot altitude, this plane is built for comfort. This all-new jet has a range of around 5,700 miles when traveling at a 650 mph cruising speed. The cockpit features a brand new Symmetry flight deck, based on Honeywell Primus Epic Avionics, that uses an enhanced-vision system, active-control sidesticks, and integrated touchscreens for a seamless flying experience.

The G500 will be available in 2018 for $43.5 million.
