In an excellent example of making the best out of a situation, a houseboat marooned by Hurricane Donna in 1960 in the Florida Keys has been transformed into a residential home.
“It is an actual 60-foot, 1948 Chris-Craft houseboat,” Cheri Tindall, listing agent, said.
Dubbed the Gilmore Estate, this 959-square-foot home located in Islamorada, Fla., has a listing price of around $6 million.
The vessel has quite a history. It was originally built for hotel magnate Conrad Hilton in 1948. It once housed famous guests including President Harry Truman, who is said to have composed much of the Truman Letters while staying there. The houseboat also hosted President George H.W. Bush.
The boat had some renovation work done to make it a home, but it has maintained its sea vessel feel.
The quaint and cozy home has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and is sitting on a sandy beach just a stone’s throw from the water. The first deck has a salon with wall length windows with ocean views, a galley-style kitchen, stateroom, and two bathrooms.
Taking the exterior stairs to the top deck, you will find the master stateroom and a private patio overlooking the ocean.
The boat sits on over five acres of property and, according Tindall, is one of the last large parcel of land left by the ocean side.
If you are looking for something with more space, Tindall says that isn’t a problem.
“The property can be expanded. Actually, you can move the houseboat and use it as a guest home and build a main residence,” Tindall said.
