Scandinavian Airlines Launches New Business Class Seats With a Sleep Contest

Sleeping on airplanes has long been an uncomfortable experience, but Scandinavian Airlines is looking to remedy this problem with the launch of their long-haul cabin for Business class.

The new seats lie completely flat. The company claims they are not only the most comfortable airplane seats but also simply comfortable in general. The seats feature Hästens bedding and come with ambient lighting to aid in the sleep process. To test their seats, they set up them up in the middle of Oslo Airport in Norway and challenged people to fall asleep.

“It was an exciting experiment to investigate the comfort of our new seats,” Marianne Orderud, Marketing Manager SAS Norway, said. “Our customers have given us very good feedback since the launch of our new long haul cabin and we look forward to launching one updated aircraft per month this year.”

The people who tested the seats were entered in a contest. Whoever fell asleep fastest received two tickets to New York aboard a plane equipped with the long-haul cabin. The winner fell asleep in just over six minutes. Electrodes were used to ensure an actual state of sleep.

The long-haul cabins are currently used on two Scandinavian Airlines aircraft.
