Large companies like Sony have found a new way to take risks on unique products, using crowd-funding. The latest device from Sony seeking funds from the general populace is the Qrio Smart Lock.

Dubbed the smallest device of its kind by Sony, the smart lock connects to the internet so you can unlock doors with your smartphone. The device even allows users to share encrypted keys via their smartphones as you can message a key through Facebook or Twitter or whatever, to give those close to you access to a secured area.
