BMW has unveiled the Concept Skytop, a sleek and exotic open-top two-seater, at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como. Channeling BMW classics like the 503 and Z8 roadsters, the Concept Skytop combines athletic proportions with hand-crafted touches for an elevated grand touring experience.
The Skytop’s muscular yet organic bodywork features crisp lines that direct the eye rearwards over flowing fenders, while details like the illuminated kidney grille and gill-like alloy wheels nod to BMW’s signature shark-nose styling. Prominent creases pay homage to the Z8, extending from the long hood over the leather-trimmed interior to the rear decklid. The LED headlights and taillights represent leading-edge technology, consolidated into the slimmest space possible.
Inside, brogue detailing and warm reddish-brown leather create an inviting, spacious atmosphere. The minimalist cockpit integrates crystal accents and saddlery crafted by BMW’s Dingolfing plant. A retractable rear window and removable twin roof panels finished in color-matched leather allow open-air motoring.
BMW has a rich heritage of sculptural roadsters, from prewar rarities like the 328 to the Z8 of the 1990s. The Concept Skytop evokes this lineage while pointing towards the future with exotic details like handle-less doors. Its hand-finished paintwork comes courtesy of Dingolfing’s master artisans.
Power comes from a 617-hp BMW M TwinPower Turbo V8, promising supercar performance in a handsome package. As a one-off design study, the Skytop brings a new dimension of dynamism to the classic roadster formula.
