This week, Aston Martin formally announced the arrival of the DB12 Volante, a roadster version of the DB12.
The open-top variant of the ‘super tourer’ — Aston’s language, perhaps proprietary — gets the same 671 horsepower out of the AMG-sourced 4.0L V8 engine, although it does lose a tenth of a second on the 0-60 sprint, which clocks in at 3.6 seconds. Like its hard-top sibling, it can reach a top speed of 202 MPH. It is outfitted with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The DB12 Volante’s lines are gracefully concise, with strident lines in profile that are a touch less sculpted, and a bit more aggressively direct, than the Aston design language that has defined this decade. The body construction uses extruded aluminum and panels made from plastic reinforced carbon fiber. The top can be raised in 14 seconds at up to 31 MPH.
As a super tourer, the DB12 features a long litany of artful design touches and acute performance features. The list includes frameless ‘Swan Wing’ doors, LED lights front and back, and Aston’s mechanical ‘Aeroblade’-equipped deployable spoiler and Adaptive Damping System. Inside, it is outfitted with a pair of 10.25-inch displays, an 11-speaker audio system, and Apple CarPlay.
Aston Martin is taking the soft-top DB12 to Monterey Car Week this month, where it will receive a formal and, we assume, very welcoming debut.
