The second brand collaboration between Airstream and REI was announced this summer. Sporting greater space and travel efficiency, and an emphasis on sustainable materials use and off-the-grid independence, the new trailer sets a standard for contemporary open-road options.
The unit itself is far more streamlined than its name. The full title is the Airstream REI Co-op Special Edition Basecamp 20X. It’s the 20X that’s key; the trailer sports a 20-foot floor plan.
The exterior of the new trailer shows off the Airstream design fundamentals that make the brand’s products so desirable — riveted metal, lingering fuselage lines — but build on them with the addition of smoked glass and a new aerodynamic look that extends from the increased interior volume.
The essentials of the unit include a galley—wider than previous—and a wet bath. However, it’s the convertible nature of the living spaces that will get more attention once the basics have been acknowledged.
The look of the interiors is undeniably contemporary. A bit of attractive wood joins a host of post-consumer laminates and fabrics, but overall this is a unit with a pleasing utilitarianism that speaks to the 2020s rambler. Potable water is secured by way of a UV-LED filter in the galley, while the water heater is a recirculating design. Options for the new Airstream x REI Basecamp include a 360-watt solar power kit and a composting toilet.
As with all Airstream x REI Special Edition trailers, a special kit called the ‘X-Package’ is standard. It includes Wranger AT tires and a lift-kit for rougher terrain, as well as stainless stone guards.
The Airstream REI Co-op Special Edition Basecamp 20X is priced from $62,400.
