The Porsche newsroom was recently all abuzz with word of the automaker’s new concept, Mission X.
The two-seat, F1-inspired design, which features a greenhouse center cockpit, hides an all-electric powertrain, and represents an evolutionary next step in street-legal racers: it builds on the lineage of classic Porsche designs like the 959 and Carrera GT, and features a door design at least partially borrowed from the 917.
The concept uses carbon-reinforced plastic for its seats, and the six-point belts are built into the monocoque. The open-top steering wheel has controls and shift paddles at the ready. But the concept also champions the luxurious side of track-inspired driving; it features a flashily new Porsche crest that employs a bit of unspecified precious metal, a subdued gray-and-brown color scheme in the cabin, and seats that can be customized with 3D printing.
Should the Mission X move into production, Porsche is convinced it’ll be the fastest road-legal rocket around The Green Hell, and will be capable of charging up with twice the alacrity of the Taycan Turbo S. Aside from the concept’s very advantageous power-to-weight ratio of one PS per Kg, Porsche isn’t willing to discuss basic performance numbers yet. But a peak rating of over 1,500 horsepower appears likely.
