Matthew Weiner, creator of the hit show Mad Men, is the seller of this character-rich Mediterranean-style mansion in Los Angeles. The property, known as the ‘Blair Estate,’ hit the open market late this spring with an asking price of $15.495 million.
The property spans more than an acre in the Hollywood foothills. The house dates to 1924, and looks the part; its narrative is an accumulation of fine detail and Hollywood Golden Age lifestyle, with a lower level choc-a-bloc with sets of French doors, and an upper section a complex of balconies, terraces, glass and the occasional striped awning. In back, the roofline peaks just off center — perfect — with a gabled dormer.
Details and materials popping up by turns in the interiors favor the period; Venetian plaster, stenciled ceiling timber, dentil molding, tile and narrow-plank hardwood floors, milled plaster, carved stone and chandeliers all pop up on a tour. The most extraordinary indoor space on the property is the glassy office, which juts precariously out over the pool and is capped by a covered outdoor lounge…although the upper-level studio in the three-level guest house is a close second.
The pool itself is designed in the shape of a bastardized rhombus, and features a fountain accent with tile panels as décor; it is surrounded by a raised patio with a BBQ and prep kitchen that transitions to a lawn dotted with elder trees. A meditation pond rests idyllic at the edge of the landscaped tree line.
Even a cursory glance at this historic property leads one to the conclusion that, at the current asking price, this oasis in the Hills won’t last long.
