The Malibu retreat of retired pro hockey player Chris Chelios appeared for sale this month with an asking price of $75 million. Chelios, who contributed to three Stanley Cup wins during a storied career, has owned the 3,795 sq. ft. property for twenty years, according to public records.

The property dates to 1982. It spans .43 acres of promontory land overlooking Paradise Cove, and among its amenities is a beachside cabana with a terrace and roof deck that’s accessible by way of a steep exterior staircase; a long hardwood deck extends from the cabana, plenty of room for a fire feature, spa, and sauna on this exceedingly private example of Malibu waterfront living.

The three-level home’s interiors lead off with a mid-level shared living area that opens to a wedge-shaped balcony through a wall of pocketing glass panes. Although renovated, the room’s architecture retains the details of the early-1980s contemporary design, with series windows and skylights and a loft-like living style; one would imagine that there was originally a fair amount of wood grain happening here, but more recent fashions in interiors have left it awash in white paint and reflected light.

The master gets the top floor, as expected, and it’s a voluminous room that’s uniquely light-drenched by way of a wraparound balcony and indoor/outdoor living options on two walls. The other three bedrooms are distributed across the home’s lower levels.
