Airstream Studio F. A. Porsche Concept Renders Classic Design Through Contemporary Lens

Thinking warm and windy this spring is Airstream. The estimable American travel/leisure icon recently let the world have a look at a new concept.

Called the Studio F.A. Porsche Travel Trailer, the caravan-sized tagalong marries the sophisticated sensibilities of Porsche Design and Airstream age-of-flight mercuriality. It still carries the singular rounded metallic look of an Airstream, of course, but its window design and placement strikes the eye as more refined, and the trademark riveting is either rendered covert or altogether absent. Under the surface rests a foundation of absolute efficiency; the unit is very light, and it is also sneakily proportioned to fit inside a standard home garage bay.

The hidden versatility of the Airstream-Porsche trailer culminates in its roof design. The caravan’s pop-up is not vaulted-style; it rises a full foot above the unit’s flush configuration, and it raises the entire ceiling rather than only a portion of it. It’s made of carbon fiber, and therefore represents a very modest weight gain. When the road calls and the pop-up is down, the trailer’s greenhouse top continues to liberate. And the tell-tale rooftop AC unit? Porsche and Airstream placed it discreetly above the floor (underneath it are the trailer’s battery, tanks and heat/hot water elements).

The trailer’s interior is Porsche Design all over: Scandinavian-inspired, atmospherically LED backlit, and very spacious-feeling for its size. The cabin adapts quickly to living area, dining area, and sleeping area. In back, a full-sized door drops down to create an indoor/outdoor space and hardwood tailgate ‘deck’.

Airstream is presently noncommittal on production of the Studio F.A. Porsche Travel Trailer. Public response may make the difference.
