The revival of BMW’s collectible 3.0 CSL — ‘Coupe Sport Lightweight’ — continued last month with the automaker’s announcement of a new, 2023 model-year iteration. A fiftieth anniversary car, the new 3.0 CSL is one of the most deliriously nostalgic efforts revealed by any automaker of late. Previous edition include the 3.0 CSL Hommage and Hommage R.
The homage concept was unveiled by BMW in the last decade as a hat-tipping to the early-1970s model, which merged track champ DNA with street-legal driving. In keeping with its determined connection to BMWs of the Me Decade, the 2023 3.0 CSL features a manual gearbox, though in updated form: it has six speeds to its credit, not four. In like terms, the inline six cylinder engine transfers to 2023, but has raised the horsepower from 200 to 560, with 404 pound-feet of torque developed. BMW tell us that it’s the most powerful I6 to ever grace a road car (the original’s was, too).
The ‘lightweight’ in the original is updated by way of extensive use of carbon fiber in the 2023 version. The new model also comes with staggered wheels — 21 inches in the rear, and 20 in front — and interior and exterior accents, colors and trim that harken back to the inspiration’s era, the most notable of which are the colorful livery and the shift knob.
And, what of the dramatic rear wing that CSL owners had to install on their lonesome back in ’72? In 2023, BWM will install it for them.
