Late last year, BMW introduced a concept for an electric-era alpha SUV: the XM. Marrying the performance prestige identity of BMW’s M sub brand with the X-body style, the concept was a forceful look at a dominant luxury daily driver for the well-heeled 2020s family. BMW calls it a ‘Sport Activity Vehicle’.

Ten months after the concept appeared, BMW has an inaugural year for the new model finalized. The XM will be in dealerships next year.

The concept’s drivetrain fundamentals have been given their own name: the ‘M Hybrid Drive System’. The plug-in hybrid system mates a single electric motor with an updated 4.4L V8 for a total theoretical output of 740 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. The real-world production model enters the picture with basic numbers a bit lower than that — 644 horses and 590 lb-ft — although a special XM Label Red variant will reportedly bring the numbers to 735 and 735 for an additional $30K or so. An eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox with launch control feature delivers the energy to all four wheels through the M xDrive system.

The all-electric range of the 2023 XM is projected to be 30 miles, which should classify it as a solid no-gas commuter for drivers with workplace charger availability. A ‘Valvetronic’ engine exhaust valve control helps with the powertrain’s efficiency, routing braking energy back to the battery.

The 2023 XM’s performance feature suites include Active Roll Stabilization, Integral Active Steering, and a near-actuator wheel slip limitation function for acute directional stability. The model rides on 23-inch M light-alloy wheels, although 22-inch wheels may be optioned. Inside the 2023 XM is a curved display, M carbon fiber trim, and an M lounge in back.

BMW will begin producing the XM in the fourth quarter of this year. The model will be produced in the automaker’s Spartanburg plant, and come with a base sticker price of $159,900, excluding a $995 destination fee.
