In November of last year, pop diva Mariah Carey took a trip through Atlanta and, along the way, ponied up $5.7 million for a nine-bedroom red brick Georgian on four acres. The property turned out to be a brief whim, however, or a sweet but passing fantasy, because as the late summer of 2022 transitions steadily to autumn, the 12,575 sq. ft. house is back on the market with a $6.5 million asking price.
The home’s grandiose façade — an overblown neoclassical pediment-and-columns set right out of the antebellum textbook — is distinguished by a symmetry that begins with the mirrored sets of lower steps leading up to the sidelight-flanked single-door entry. Inside, the house develops nicely in keeping with the style and regional design elements, leading off with a foyer decorated with a crystal chandelier and glossy oak plank floors which begin with an inlaid meandros border.
A keystone arch leads to the main living areas, which culminate in a bright combination living room and kitchen, the former with a fireplace and an exterior wall lined with three sets of French doors and the latter with a massive island with seating on three sides. Other highlights of the lower level include the staunchly traditional library: hardwood paneling, dentil molding and fireplace.
Upstairs, the accommodations peak with a large master suite with two fireplaces; the bedroom is supported by a bright pink salon, a bath with split vanities and a ‘tween soaking tub, and a walk-in closet. A terrace overlooks the pool, which sits at the center of the tree-bordered lawn.
