A Central California home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1961 appeared on the open market this summer. The Los Banos property is asking $4.25 million.

In the midst of its setting — a green plain that unfurls toward the foothills in the distance — the house of Fawcett Farm is positioned like an outpost, a particularly evocative bit of human engineering within an Edenic Californian expanse. Its landscaping frames it superbly, and as the mature trees that surround it have aged with the home, it establishes a particularly meaningful dialogue with the structure. There’s a bit of falling water on the property too, oxygenating a koi pond.

The detail at work in the home is unusually heavy. The geometric motif at work is the triangle, and throughout the interior this primary symbol appears constantly: in a stained glass panel, in the ornamental portals in kitchen and baths, in the roof overhang and the lighting fixtures, in the floor tile. And in the arrowhead-like elevated flourish that is the culmination of the roofline, and was used in other late Wright designs to suggest flight.

But there’s a lot more going on in this house, and the fireplace, extravagantly long and well-lit hallway, clerestories, ornamental dividers, floating shelves, glassy bedrooms and stunning swimming pool design also contribute to its extraordinarily rich narrative.
