A little more than a year ago, Canadian media heiress Taylor Thomson stepped up to invest heavily in Santa Monica.
It was Villa Ruchello, the historic estate owned at the time by fellow Canadian and media-world figure Shane Smith, which caught Thomson’s eye and beguiled her out of nearly $50 million. In the autumn, up for sale went the Los Angeles Tudor she has owned for about twenty years — with an asking price of $43 million. This summer, after about eight months on the market, Thomson slashed the price of the mansion to $35 million.
The 1926-built house was designed by Gordon Kaufmann, whose other projects in Los Angeles include the Times building. It features an exterior clad in stone, with half-timbering and ancient ivy featured prominently, and a slate-tiled hipped roof. Numbering among the period details inside the home are chandeliers, stained glass and roundel windows, tile, fireplaces, and wood paneling. Concessions to contemporary tastes include the spa.
With the estate’s guest house, there are eight bedrooms and ten baths throughout 8,799 sq. ft. of interiors on the property. The grounds, which measure in at 1.06 acres, are a lushly landscaped collection of patios, paths and gardens.
Thomson’s net worth is around $8.5 billion, according to Bloomberg.
