Netherlands-based exotic carmaker Donkervoort is back in the automotive news this summer. The the latest from the Dutch firm should be cause for celebration among American supercar enthusiasts, particularly those enamored of the design road less traveled: the light, fast and visually engaging D8 GTO Individual Series model will make it to the ’States this year.
The model’s power-to-weight ratio and track-oriented design give it racing chops that rival its fascinating form; scuttlebutt has it that a Donkervoort embarrassed a Koenigsegg on a racetrack in the not-too-distant past. The D8 GTO Individual carries on from the high bar set by the D8 GTO-JD70; outfitted with a 2.5L five-cylinder engine producing 435 horsepower and tipping the scales at just 1,500 pounds (nearly on the nose), the carbon-fiber-bodied supercar can move from 0-62 mph in 2.7 seconds and 0-124 MPH in 7.7 seconds.
The real story according to Donkervoort, however, is the greatly expanded degree of customization possible in the new D8 GTO. Individual by build it is; according to the automaker, ‘hundreds of thousands’ of design combinations are now possible, making development of an individual example entirely interactive. Not bad for a $240,000 starting price.
