Retired professional race car driver Jenson Button saw his Santa Monica home into the rearview mirror this summer. The four-bedroom changed hands for $5.8 million, the exact same amount Button paid when he acquired the home in March of this year. It hit the open market in April, and was listed at $6.5 million.
The property is the second Button has shucked this year. The first was a retreat in Palm Springs; the Spanish-style dates to 1936, and contains four bedrooms across 3,012 sq. ft. It closed at $3.548 million—$50K over ask.
Like the Palm Springs house, the Santa Monica home’s original details are among its more compelling features. Arched casement windows, staircases with tile risers, a tile roof, exposed rafters and hardware, wall niches, and an outdoor fountain are a few of them.
The home’s courtyard leads to a home entryway that’s capped by a pergola heavy with flowering vines. The foyer is a rotunda design with an enclosed staircase, a tile floor and a two-story ceiling from which hangs a modest chandelier.
The living room’s a gem, with a ceiling punctuated by hand-hewn beams, a stucco fireplace, and a kiva-shaped picture window. In the dining room, French doors and a French casement illuminate, and bring a breeziness to the proceedings. In back: another tile courtyard, this time with the requisite swimming pool.
