A home once occupied by Ronald Reagan, the first Hollywood actor to turn his star power into political juice, popped up for sale in Sacramento this summer. The residence was Ronald and Nancy Reagan’s home base during his two terms as Governor of California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They in fact preferred it to the Governor’s mansion.

Listing information has the house as a Grande Dame, and the appellation holds water; a distinguished English Country House-style dating to the heady financial days of 1929, it keeps to the conceit of its architectural inspiration save the fact that a clay tile roof has replaced the traditional slate.

The interiors nicely balance the English style with the climatological fundamentals of the California lifestyle, and a design flourish spotted throughout the 6,963 sq. ft. house is sets of interior French doors that suggest transition, airiness and procession. Hipped ceilings are also a frequent sight in the three-bedroom, with the master’s dressed up with a tray flourish rimmed with crown molding and centered by a chandelier.

Other details at work in the house: dentils—there’s a lot of ‘em—fireplaces, including a coal-burner in the master, and original narrow-plank hardwood. A media room and a full-sized bar number among the creature comforts; outside, a partially covered red brick patio, lawns, a BBQ and an outdoor dining area with a fireplace take top billing.
