On the heels of the UXh reveal, Luxury carmaker Lexus took the wraps of the next model year iteration of the RX last month, revealing a version of the SUV that looks larger and more imposing than its outgoing elder.
The new RX looks less ‘windswept’ than its predecessor, and its body language hints at American SUV design language: impassive, powerful, and blunt. The much-discussed Lexus grille has lost its pinch and taken on a trapezial character, while the windshield transitions nearly without interruption to a greenhouse roof. In profile, the RX’s side creases are more subtle, while the rear light assembly is now a single bar.
The gas-only entry-level RX350’s powertrain is now dominated by a super-efficient 2.4L four rather than a six, which delivers 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. The baseline hybrid variant, the RX350h, includes a 2.5L four, which combines with a motor to provide 246 HP and 233 lb-ft. The top end of the lineup is the AWD RX500h F Sport, which also receives the 2.4L four, but a more powerful electrical component brings the total output to 367 HP and 406 lb-ft. A mid-range variation, the RX450h+, is forthcoming.
Trim level names for the series include Premium, Premium+, Luxury, and of course F Sport Handling. Lexus also gave the RX family a full interior overhaul, which includes an optional 14-inch infotainment touchscreen.
