Toward the end of 2016, a unique timber-heavy contemporary home in Encino was purchased for $8 million by actors Alyson Hannigan and Alexis Denisof. This summer, the home is back on the market; it’s priced at $18 million, but shows a huge improvement in the expression of its living style.

At the time of the sale six years ago, the home’s interiors were of the somewhat chilly variety, which seemed a shame; glass-heavy and sporting a wealth of timber, an arresting sense of space and Japanese architectural design inspiration, a lot of dark brown and beige tones had been used to render it moody. There’s a reason ‘brown study’ was at one time used to suggest morbidity or depression.

During their ownership tenure, however, Hannigan and Denisof breathed a heck of a lot of life into the house. The brown paint that hid a myriad of fine natural woodgrain has been stripped away — suddenly, all the reclaimed timber has context again, and the shared spaces take on considerable warmth — and together with a series of other revisions that include bringing a bit of welcome color into the kitchen and dropping the vacuous glitz of the master bedroom’s tapered crystal chandelier and metallic headboard has changed the personality of the home. Is it ten mil worth of improvement? That’s in the eye of the beholder, but the property is a stunner.

The five-bedroom, eight-bath estate is one of the larger we’ve seen in Encino, and the grounds extend to 3.27 acres. A sunken tennis court and a detached guest house are the more salient features of the property exterior.

Hannigan has hosted Penn & Teller: Fool Us for the past six seasons.

Denisof’s current projects include fantasy drama series Legacies.
