The onetime Manhattan apartment of Hollywood legend Greta Garbo is back on the market. The listing of the co-op in East Midtown marks the second possible closing of the property in the last five years.
In 2017, the three-bedroom, three-bath home hit the market with a $6 million ask; the listing marked the first time the property had been offered for sale outside the Garbo family since Greta took ownership and eventually retired to reside almost entirely within its walls. The apartment closed about eight months after listing; reports circulated that it had sold $8.5 million, better than 40% over ask. It wound up going for $5.95 million.
The cusp of summer 2022 finds the co-op unit listed again. The current owner is asking $7.25 million.
The residence returns to the market essentially as Garbo left it, including the silk on the master bedroom walls. Its heart is its L-shaped living room, a grand space with abundant natural light, a fireplace, built-in bookshelves, and East River views from its windows, but the unit also features a private elevator entrance, a balcony, and a formal dining room. Sensitive renovations to the apartment have been undertaken, with the kitchen and baths of course receiving the most attention.
