Former Washington Nationals stalwart Ryan Zimmerman—who played 16 seasons with the team—listed his secluded oasis in Virginia for sale on the open market recently. The retired MLB first baseman is asking $8.5 million for the six-bedroom, nine-bath estate, which sits on a bucolic 5-acre parcel in Great Falls.

With its hipped roofline, stone accents and board and batten shutters, the house appears to suggest a bit of French provincial; its setting, a green expanse of lawn, landscaping and mature trees, makes the ideal context for the 13,232 sq. ft. home. In back, where the home’s indoor living spaces give way to a natural stone patio and pool area, a water wheel is used to enhance the French countryside feel.

Inside, the home is similarly affecting. Beamed ceilings finished in plank, warm off-white paint, plank and herringbone-pattern floors, a stone fireplace accent wall, and plentiful glass are among the details; tips of the hat to tradition include panoramic wall covering in the dining room, and a breakfast alcove with a window seat.
