Singer-songwriter and American Idol grad Katharine McPhee listed her character-filled 1930s Spanish Eclectic in Los Angeles for sale on the open market last month. The property appeared with a $2.695 million asking price, fair enough for a 3,527 sq. ft. four-and-four on a .3-acre lot in a quiet corner of Hollywood Hills. It made quite an impression, apparently, and must have started a bidding war; when the dust settled earlier this week, the buyer had parted with $3.27 million for the privilege of calling the little place home.
A look at the façade, most especially the stone turret entrance and Gothic entryway and front door that dominate it, are an accurate foreshadower of things to come within; the front door, casement, picture and fanlight window, and upper balcony French doors have all been painted a soft pale blue, which compliments the red tile roof and white stucco admirably.
The interiors begin with a cute foyer decorated with a hewn ceiling beam with carved ends; to the left is a step-down living room with a rusticated stone fireplace accent wall that’s been given a lick of bright white paint, while the open-trussed ceiling, which is inset with a series of skylights, has been painted a soft beige.
Niche built-ins, arched doorways, tile staircase risers, newly-finished narrow-plank oak, a bit of stained glass, and French casements and doors a-plenty are additional details at work in the home. The home’s outdoor living area is a very private pool-free zone with a covered living area outfitted with a fireplace as well as a BBQ and countertop.
