Showing off a series of upgrades that includes a major personality change, the 2023 BMW X7 rolled into view this spring with substantial style alterations, more horsepower, and a revised interior that’s almost meditatively spare.

As dramatic as the exterior and interior revisions are, the new powertrain choices for the upcoming model year X7 are as substantial, so let’s begin there. The baseline mode, the X7 xDrive40i, has a new engine, a 3.0L turbo six-cylinder, which delivers 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The mid-level variant in the lineup, the X7 M60i, doesn’t see a bump (or reduction) in power — the ratings remain stable at 523 HP and 553 lb-ft. Up top, the biturbo V8-powered Alpina XB7 comes in at 630 HP and 590 lb-ft. All 2023 iterations of the X7 will come with a 48-volt mild hybrid system for efficiency.

In the style department, the new X7 lineup features a reimagined nose; there are separate headlamps for running and illumination which, together with the ‘butterfly’ grille, give the front end a formidable look. Inside the SUV, the dash is flared for a sculpted, windswept look, and the 14.9-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch display blends right into it like a single unit, giving the whole an unfussy, even sedate look.

New to the X7 for tech features and assistance: bicyclist detection which, along with pedestrian detection, makes the collision and braking assistance suite more comprehensive, and the X7 more pleasant to drive in intense urban environments. For creature comfort touches, the X7 family now comes with a power memory feature for their heated seats. It’s the little things.
