Mercedes’ AMG performance division is 55 years old this year, and to mark the occasion Mercedes-AMG has a new G-Wagen for 2022: the Mercedes-AMG G 63 Edition 55.

The Edition 55 variant of the classically stodgy and arguably prototypical SUV comes with the same 577-HP 4.0L V8 biturbo of the 2022 AMG G 63. Edition-specific features includes a cosmetics theme designed around Mercedes’ Night Package — with a wheel size increase from the package’s standard 20 inches to 22 — and special edition graphics that advertise the G-Wagen’s AMG DNA and the birthday in question.

The interior of the special-edition G 63 receives a Nappa leather treatment with bright red as the primary color; again, black trim enhances the look of the Edition 55, with interior accents including a wrapped steering wheel and a fair dose of carbon fiber. AMG is backlit in the edition’s doorsills.

U.S.-bound examples of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 Edition 55 — there will be 55 in all — will come in Obsidian Black. Expect to see it lurking in dealerships in the third or fourth quarter. Pricing TBA.
