The collaboration of French exotic automaker Bugatti and Swiss watchmaking firm Jacob & Co. has tendered more than one arresting timepiece design in the past decade or so. The watchmaker’s tourbillon twist on the automaker’s already-classic W16 engine is itself nearly paradigmatic; the Bugatti Chiron Blue Sapphire Crystal, La Montre Noire, or the rough-and-ready Twin Turbo Furious 300+ exemplify the art and science of extending Bugatti cachet into a another realm of mechanical precision.
The newest time-keeper in the flashy series is more understated, and the better watch for it. It’s also more attainable for mere mortals, as it comes in at $250K, instead of the frequent million-plus price tag. The Jacob & Co. Jean Bugatti is a more elegant design, recalling the founder of the company and his original designs; in keeping, its visuals hark back to a Golden Age dashboard and the front end of a period Bugatti.
There’s contemporary technical chops under the hood, though, and this watch features a chronograph with double retrograde seconds and digital minutes. The twin tourbillons are there, but less three-dimension. An elegant design for the horological — and automotive — classicist.
Only 57 examples in white gold, and 57 in rose gold, will be produced.
