The aristocratic, character-rich 1904-built Maine island ‘summer cottage’ owned by actor John Travolta is back on the market this March. The property, which extends to 48.13 acres and is anchored by an eccentric, Gothic-tinged grand dame of a Shingle Style, is now priced at $5 million.
The house is a sprawler—it contains 20 bedrooms across 10,830 sq. ft.—and as filled with surprises inside as it is outside. Travolta and co. renovated it to taste, and augmenting its original details, which include the narrow-plank hardwood floors and the wonderful fieldstone fireplace in the living room, is a cottagey design style that occasionally drifts into playful kitschiness (witness the bar, and its backdrop, the staircase with the solid balustrade finished in greens).
Four original lots went into the grounds, which encompass large areas of forest and meadow…and, of course, rocky private beaches. A deep water dock and a swimming pool complete a sketch of a unique estate in a far-flung artist’s community off the coast of Maine.
Travolta’s upcoming projects include action film Paradise City, With Bruce Willis.
