Dr. Gary Michelson, the spinal surgery innovator and billionaire philanthropist, is the buyer of a new build in Los Angeles. The property, an eight-bedroom, one-acre estate situated on a Mandeville Canyon lot dotted with ancient sycamores and oaks, closed last summer at $23.9 million, according to Dirt.
The estate’s three-bedroom guest house says much about its degree of carefully engineered extravagance, and so does its landscaping, which incorporates a citrus orchard and secluded lawns within a design that encourages the fantasy that the home is a far-flung retreat.
The main house is a two-level design that opens to the property’s 48-foot saltwater pool and patio through electric Fleetwood doors. On the second level, the solid hardwood balustrades of a series of balconies can be spotted; one of them belongs to the master, which also features a sitting area with a linear fireplace, and a bath with a freestanding soaking tub positioned near a retractable pane of glass.
Amenities in the 12,000 sq. ft. home include an elevator, a gym that doubles as a Pilates studio, a main kitchen with seemingly endless counter space and a waterfall island, catering kitchens (one of which is presumably in the guest house), and a screening room with walls covered in velvet and electric shades. Outside, a cabana with a fireplace and kitchen is positioned beyond the pool.
Michelson’s net worth is $1.7 billion.
