The onetime Tennessee residence of Olympian rock-and-roller Little Richard—born Richard Wayne Penniman—surfaced on the open market recently priced at $1.75 million. The property in Lynchburg is anchored by a sprawling, two-level home containing seven bedrooms and six baths, but the 20 acres that provides its setting was likely as important to Richard, whose celebrity never really faded.
The 6,209 sq. ft. house is not joined on the property by a companion guest house. However, it does appear to be designed to contain one within its walls; its accommodations are supported by two kitchens and two dining rooms. Apparently, Richard had the house custom-built as a two-for-one.
The brick exterior gives way to interiors that are warm and, despite the home’s previous owner, fairly conventional; a renovation conducted recently has denuded one section of the home of its more colorful aspects.
Details and materials at work in this house include oak plank and carpeted floors, fireplaces—at least three—and, at one point, a spiral staircase. The master bedroom opens to a private deck, and is matched with a master bath with a splendid alcove soaking tub.
Little Richard had his first No. 1 hit in 1956. He would score 15 more in the following three years. The Beatles opened for him when he toured in Europe, and Elvis Presley reportedly told him his music was an inspiration, and that he was “the greatest.”
