Turnkey multi-residence mansions constitute the rarest of the rare in Manhattan. When this one turned up for sale for $25 million, publisher and producer Peter Brant set his sights on it. According to public records, the pair of adjacent townhouses, which measure 47 feet in width, sold for two bagels under $20 million in the middle of January, giving Brant and his wife Stephanie Seymour 12,000 sq. ft. of Upper East Side interiors in which to hang their hats.

The property is known as the George F. Baker, Jr., Housing Complex. It was designed by Delano & Aldrich, and dates to around 1930. The property’s living spaces begin with a classically inspired foyer that features a brown-and-white marble floor, a fireplace, Ionic half-columns, wall niches, and milled plaster.

As the residences develop, the details accumulate, with carved fireplace mantels in many rooms, as well as colorful tile, oversized windows, and ceilings measuring eleven to fifteen feet. A few of the more remarkable spaces: the library, with flush built-in floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, the master bedroom—which features a fireplace surround in extraordinarily figured marble and walls painted a shade of yellow that might’ve been borrowed from Versailles.

The residences span four levels, with a cellar with a kitchen occupying the subterranean space, and a double-height ground-level garage. Other notable features include a spiral staircase that climbs toward a round skylight, a mahogany-paneled elevator, and a powder room with a lounge.
