Billionaire Sue Gross Relists Beverly Hills Modern for $38M

Late last year, philanthropist Sue Gross took ownership of a property adjacent to her Beverly Hills estate. The acquisition came at a price of $16.1 million. It added a half acre of land to her compound, as well as a convincing five-bedroom Tuscan-style with 5,376 sq. ft. of interiors that will make a dandy guest house.

However, Gross’s 1966-vintage modern in the 90210 — which she purchased from Ellen DeGeneres in 2018 — remains stubbornly unsold. But two can play at that game. And back onto the open market it goes in early 2022 without a price snip. When it appeared in the high summer of last year, it asked $38 million, and $38 million is where the listing remains. The red-marker aversion may well be justified; the gem of a modern is a genuine collectible, and the likes of it are few and far in between.

The house sits on a .72-acre gated lot, which allows for a pleasantly lengthy drive between hedges and mature trees. The exterior features slatted hardwood accents, and the emphasis on wood plays out in spades in the interiors; the kitchen is particularly expressive, with a plank ceiling that’s inset with a deep-shaft skylight as well as a plank-capped island and floor-to-ceiling cabinetry.

A pivoting door in the living area opens up the space to the property exterior, where a covered poolside patio awaits. Other amenities include a spa and a wet bar.

Gross’ net worth is $1.5 billion, per Forbes. Her namesake foundation focuses on healthcare and education, among other causes. Last month, the foundation donated $3 million to the University of California, Irvine to benefit the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing. Between the two of them, formerly married couple Bill and Sue Gross have donated over $750 million to charity.
