Richard Gere’s most famous property may be Strongheart, the Hamptons estate he sold to Matt Lauer and Annette Roque back in 2016, but this property north of the City is perhaps more compelling. The estate is anchored by a two-story, 2000-built shingle-style with a bit of Dutch design inspiration and a rambling layout.
The property is located in Pound Ridge, a quiet and strikingly beautiful corner of Westchester County; on two sides, the estate faces Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, a 4,300-acre parcel of protected land, with Gilmore Pond and Stone Hill River in the foreground.
There are eight bedrooms and ten baths throughout the main house and guest and caretaker’s cottages, and the 50-acre estate also features a pool, stables, gardens, sports courts, a beach with a covered pavilion, and achingly lovely gardens, hills and tree-dotted lawns.
The interiors of the shingle-style incorporate cottage, farmhouse and modern colonial styles; details include doors and wide-plank flooring that has been given an antique finish, and beamed and tongue-and-groove ceilings. Highlights include the sunroom, which is floored in slate, and the master bedroom, which features a sitting room and fireplace.
A peek inside the additional houses on the property reveals a spectacular vaulted pine ceiling with exposed trusses and iron, and an art studio.
Gere starred 1990’s Pretty Woman with a relatively unknown Julia Roberts, who landed the role after a string of A-list actresses auditioned for it and many more turned it down. Gere initially refused to participate in the project. The film broke the sales record for a romantic comedy. It grossed $463 million on a budget of $14 million.
