The character-rich, 1896-built Victorian tattoo artist Kat Von D picked up in 2016 is back on the open market this winter. The dramatic red brick mansion is priced at $15 million. It has been carefully restored in keeping with the design sensibilities of its era, and should be seen even if you’re not in the market for a full-blooded mansion of the fin-de-siècle sort.

Built for California mover-and-shaker Isaac Newton Van Nuys, the three-story house contains thirteen bedrooms and ten baths in its 12,565 sq. ft. of interiors. It features a semi-enclosed covered porch with stone supports and columns, a turret, and a gated front walk and front entrance with carved arched double doors and stained glass sidelights.

As it has been restored, the interiors begin with a foyer that looks much the way it would’ve looked a century ago, with plentiful dark wood, an alcove fireplace, and an arched stairwell. Some of the more striking spaces include the living room, which boasts gilded milled friezes, oak parquet, and a ceiling fresco, and the library/office, with its marble fireplace, built-in bookshelves, and ornate crown moldings. The Gothic kitchen is worth the price of admission all by itself.

The lot measures .62 acres, and is largely occupied by a garden designed in the romantic style—although a pool currently filled with magenta-tinted water is not to be forgotten as a primary outdoor amenity.
