Bette Davis’ Laguna Beach Retreat Available for $17M After Price Reduction

The onetime home of Bette Davis is back on the market this winter with a price snip. The 5,400 sq. ft. house appeared for sale in the spring of this year, asking $19.995 million. Its relist comes with a chop that, with others levied since initial list, have left it with a significant reduction: 15%. To close out 2021, the property is asking $16.995 million.

The home’s location on a rocky bit of Laguna Beach coastline is nearly Hollywood Gothic: vertigo-inducing, dramatic, and quite lovely. The property’s consolations include a meandering series of staircases and landings that descend from the home’s imperious, stony promontory lot to a more down-to-earth waterfront overlook below.

The French Normandy-style house dates to 1929, and comes with a wealth of era-evoking details as well as a few key renovations from far more recent times. The exterior is stucco, with blue-trimmed French casement windows in leaded glass and a slate roof. A covered tile landing is the preamble to entry.

Interior details that really stand out include the raw ceiling, stained glass window, and graceful mansard fireplace in the living room, the soft green and yellow color scheme of the dayroom — which includes a checkerboard tile floor — and the romantic booth breakfast nook. Views from the home’s many windows are frequently superb, ocean vistas that are by turns serene and slightly anxiety-inducing.

Davis had more than 100 acting credits to her name, including 1938’s Jezebel and 1978’s Death on the Nile. She also starred in 1939’s Dark Victory, with Humphrey Bogart and a young Ronald Reagan.
