About five years ago, actor Jim Belushi quietly floated Villa Burlingame, his estate in Los Angeles, for sale. The whisper listing asked $42 million for the Brentwood property. Open market listings followed starting at $38.5 million, with the mansion’s price eventually dropping to $30 million in 2018 and $28 million in 2019 before reasserting itself at $33.5 million this past spring. The home finally sold this autumn; in the end, it closed at $30 million.

Belushi and his wife Jennifer custom-built the property. They purchased the parcel in 2007, paying $8.3 million, and hired architect Oscar Shamamian to design the estate. Construction took over two years, and the 14,000 sq. ft. Tuscany-inspired house was completed in 2010.

Architecture, materials and design flourishes all suggest an older villa—one that has aged particularly well. Ceilings finished with milled plaster, limestone floors, stucco, and a variety of pendant and lantern light fixtures (nary a recessed unit) can be spotted in a tour of the house. The master bedroom is more modestly sized than one might expect; the tasteful proportions are amplified by a cozy fireplace and a dramatic hipped ceiling finished with the millwork pattern spotted elsewhere in the home.

Including the guest house by the pool, there are six bedrooms and eleven baths on the property, as well as a library, family room, media room and catering-ready kitchen. The 1.31 acres of grounds include expansive lawns, loggias capped with ivy-covered pergolas, water features, patios, and walking paths that meander beneath an arbor and through gardens.
