Peripatetic street artist Bansky is back in the art world news this fall with another high-dollar sale. His work Love is in the Bin went to a new bidder. The sale represented a record price for artwork produced by the mysterious fellow.
The painting attracted several serious bidders during a heated auction-house fracas. The painting last sold as Girl with Balloon in 2018, when it fetched $1.4 million. Following that sale, the painting went through something of a subversive metamorphosis: a shredder installed secretly within the frame destroyed part of it as the gavel struck three. Now, that’s artistic iconoclasm. Bansky’s laughter could be heard from halfway around the world.
But the novelty and the wit that inspired it made the work more valuable still. The painting sold at auction at Sotheby’s in London, reaching $25.4 million by the time the dust settled.
