Actor Judd Hirsch listed his retreat in Ulster County, New York, this summer. The property is currently priced at $4.499 million.
The 5,600 sq. ft. farmhouse was custom built, and completed in 1985. It sits on 77 acres of land in the forested Catskill area. As an example of back-to-the-land architecture, it occupies an unusual historical space; its use of reclaimed wood and emphasis on alternative energy sources make it both a nostalgic build and a very relevant one by today’s standards.
The interiors are an eccentrically naturalistic tour-de-force that’s a feast for the eyes. The surprises include a trio of stone fireplaces, each a sculptural statement, as well as a great room dressed up with timber from a 200-year-old barn.
Other details include the bluestone door adorning one of the home’s five bathrooms, barn-style plank flooring in pine, the varied wood of the upper-level billiards room, the master bedroom’s backboard and hieroglyph panel, and the tile and steam shower in the master bath.
Views from the home’s abundant (and irregularly-shaped) glass soar across miles of rolling landscape. The house is augmented by a dozen secondary structures, including multiple guest accommodations. A tennis court, an outdoor pavilion with a BBQ grill, and a swimming pool are among the outdoor amenities.
Hirsh’s upcoming projects include The Fabelmans, with Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen; Hollywood Stargirl, with Uma Thurman; and Showing Up, with Michelle Williams.
