The last time we heard from Neil Patrick Harris, he was tossing down $5.5 million for a Hamptons estate that had at one time been hearth and home to Grove Press owner Barney Rosset.
That was the winter of 2017. The summer of 2021 finds Harris in Harlem, and in a selling mood rather than a buying one. This month, the actor put his 8,000 sq. ft. townhouse in the city up for sale for $7.325 million.
The building dates to 1908, and was recently revised by architect Jeffrey Povero. Original details get top billing in the entry and foyer; the doors, wainscoting and staircase are original; the newel post is a treat, focusing the carved wood and dentils at work in the foyer and foreshadowing similar elements visible elsewhere in this invitational residence.
The home gets off to a leisurely start by way of a lounge with an original, full-length bar and fireplace; it looks as though this house could’ve acted as one of the 50,000 or so password-protected ways around the Volstead Act that existed in the city at the height of the country’s spirited drought, but the fixtures were really adopted orphans dislocated from a classic hotel.
Other amenities in and around this house include a kitchen updated in a flashily artistic style, a master suite with a fireplace and an outdoor Jacuzzi, a library and den, and the capper: a large roof deck with a grille, and a dining area topped with a pergola.
Harris’ upcoming projects include The Matrix: Resurrections, with Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, with Nicolas Cage, Pedro Pascal, and Tiffany Haddish. He also stars in the upcoming HBO Max comedy film 8-Bit Christmas.
