The news from Lamborghini’s appearance at this year’s Quail show at Monterey: a Countach revival called the LPI 800-4. The lead is interesting enough, suggesting the revival of the legendary Countach model of the 1970s and 1980s. The model’s reveal has engendered a fair degree of controversy, though. Is it a dressed-up Aventador with Sían power elements?

The car’s wedge shape recalls the period of Lamborghini’s brash takeover of the exotic sports market; the Countach’s design language was truly iconoclastic. The LPI 800-4 is a tribute model, then, a Countach for the new century. But its nouveau-riche attention-getting angularity has of course been softened.

The LPI 800-4 is also a Countach for the new decade: its hybrid powertrain borrows the supercapacitor tech, as well as the V12, from the Sían, producing a total of 800 horsepower, hence the three digit number of the appellation; the ‘4’ denotes AWD. The LPI 800-4 can hit 62 MPH in 2.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 220 MPH.

The LPI 800-4’s construction is dominated by carbon fiber; the material is used for the monocoque, of course, but also throughout the car’s components and trim. The car’s roof is a panoramic design that’s made from photochromic material, a nice touch. The model features carbon ceramic brakes, and rims that recall the rims of 1980s Lamborghinis.

Lamborghini will manufacture 112 examples of the LPI 800-4 and the entire production run is already sold out. An official price isn’t mentioned, but the short-lived model is said to go for about $2.64 million.
