Hedge fund guru and Caxton Associates founder Charman Bruce Kovner has put his estate in Santa Barbara County up for sale this summer. The property is located in Carpinteria and has been titled The Sanctuary at Loon Point.

Apparently 14 years in the making, and with five parcels forming its foundation, the estate features two large homes in its overall layout. The whole kit and caboodle is priced at $160 million. And that’s quite the bargain; according to The Wall Street Journal, Kovner spent $110 million on assembling the parcels and another $50 million on construction.

Both of the houses feature Mediterranean-inspired architecture, with elements of country homes of the South of France shining through. The listing gives a total interior measurement of 14,189 sq. ft. and details the size of the lot as 22 acres. Kovner is not opposed to selling the estate piecemeal; $80 million buys roughly half the estate.

It’s evident that the outfitting of these house represents a considerable portion of the 14-year assembly period; reclaimed materials and components can be spotted everywhere, giving the interior lifestyle a veneer of carefully engineered, geographically specific period rusticity that does a fine job of mimicking authenticity. Some of the details are strikingly complex, and the result is a dramatically beautiful aggregate not unlike a collage or art installation.

The estate’s grounds feature gardens in the style of Southern France; a vineyard section drives the point home. The waterfront bluff that constitutes the natural border of the land makes it something of a promontory location, and the outdoor living space of the home in the listing takes in hypnotic water views.

Kovner’s net worth is north of $6 billion.
