This past winter, following the appearance of the Porsche Unseen book on bookshelves actual and virtual, a series of chapters from Porsche’s undeveloped design back pages appeared on the automaker’s website in a slow trickle of curiosity-inducing reveals.
Among the concepts that emerged from the Porsche creative hopper was a van which, had it entered production, would have acted as both homage to Porsche’s racing history and 21st-century conveyance: the Vision Renndienst, a compact conveyance with a green soul.
The initial reveal of the concept focused on the exterior of the concept. This summer, Porsche revealed what the inside of the Renndienst would look like, and details of its autonomous operation. The van’s modular interior boasts a flexible-center cockpit with a 180-degree swiveling operator’s chair, smartphone operation, and a cabin that can act as both private workspace and socially-inspiring space, with offset seating between rows and windows that favor seclusion or openness.
Sustainable materials, including wood, are also part of the picture in the Vision Renndienst. And, while there are currently no plans to move the van toward production, it continues to suggest the future of the Porsche road experience.
