Producer and writer Shonda Rhimes hefted her grand Los Angeles residence onto the open market recently. The house appeared with a $25 million asking price. It’s got a lot to say, and its history can be gleaned in the complex narrative of its details.

Renovations have been extensive but sensitive—and pricey—and for the most part the 1923 vintage of this home shines through effortlessly through original details and superb contemporary reproductions. The shared living spaces culminate in a soaring great room, which features a raw wood cathedral ceiling, second-story overlooks, and an extension of the muted black and white checkerboard tile that begins in the foyer.

The most ornate room is undoubtedly the step-down parlor. Details spotted here include an ornate milled plaster ceiling, an original fireplace in what appears to be red soapstone, a set of pocketing doors, and carved wood lintels. Some knockout light fixtures can be spotted here, in the den, and in the formal dining room; like much of. Other details of note include the tile floors in the kitchen and master bath—clearly newer, but mesmerizing.

The .68 acres of grounds is filled out with lawns, a large patio, a pool with a cabana, gardens, and a guest house which is partially occupied with a hair salon.

Rhimes’ recent deal with Netflix has been estimated at $300 million. Her upcoming miniseries projects include Inventing Anna. Rhimes is the creator of Grey’s Anatomy; the television series’ 18th season is scheduled to premiere in the fall.
