The striking Malibu beach house of Eli Broad sold recently after over a year on the market.
The billionaire and art collector listed the property in March of last year with a $75 million ask. A price chop in September brought it down to $62 million; after Broad’s death this spring, the waterfront escape returned with a $58.5 million ask, ultimately selling in early summer for $51.7 million.
The house was designed by influential architect Richard Meier, and completed in 2002. Its setting is Carbon Beach, and from that side the home’s two levels open to the scenery through floor-to-ceiling glass. From the curb, the house is complex and sculptural, a circumspect blend of impenetrability and openness.
Between the main house and guest house, living spaces total 5,374 sq. ft. There are five bedrooms and seven baths throughout the property. The home’s living area is a stunning evocation of scale and light, with a sculpted ceiling break opening it up with a two-level ceiling, and pale hardwood—maple?—keeping the living style down-to-earth.
Outside, a wide hardwood deck runs the full width of the home, with steps leading down to the beach.
