More information emerged this month about BMW’s exciting all-electric truck, the 2022 iX, and the model’s initial variant, the xDrive50 version, which will be the first to reach dealerships.
The iX xDrive50 was announced in March of this year. At that time, details revealed by BMW about the big new ecologically relevant rig included information about the powertrain — a pair of motors, one dedicated to each axle — and the body, which is composed of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic over an aluminum frame. BMW calls the model a SAV—Sport Activity Vehicle—as opposed to SUV, enhancing its marketing clout as an iconoclastic presence.
Additional information included range, charge time and top speed: respectively, 373 miles, 35 minutes to 85% at a quick-charge station, and 124 MPH. The 2022 iX xDrive50 can hit 62 MPH in less than five seconds.
The new details revealed by BMW brings some of the information previously listed by the company into sharper focus. The powertrain design allocates more juice to the back motor than the front, with 335 hp delivered in the rear and 268 in the front; the iX xDrive50 can reach 62 mph in 4.6 seconds. BMW calls the multi-component CFRP body a ‘Carbon Cage’ that keeps weight down and cabin space generous.
Other details include a panoramic glass roof, automatic climate control with nanofiber air filtering, Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance, near actuator wheel slip limitation technology, and the latest BMW Head-Up Display. The cabin design scheme is uncluttered, with a single-piece display that combines driver information and controls the symbol of the new visual simplicity. Options include two-axle air suspension.
BMW is meticulous about touting all the innovation packed into the iX xDrive50, indicating just how seriously the company takes the new model and what it heralds for the automaker’s future, as well as sustainability initiatives undertaken and materials used in the SAV. BMW has partnered with EVgo for easy charging station access.
Pricing for the 2022 iX xDrive50 starts at $84,195.
