For the 2022 model year, BMW has given their popular entry-level and mid-line SUVs, the X3 and X4, a series of revisions. The changes include a mild hybrid system, which will be available on the upper-tier M40i variants of both models.
The familiar 48-volt boost brings a little recycling to the 3.0L six-cylinder but no EV-only driving for commuters, although the car can drop the ICE and remain operational when coasting, and the system does add a token 11 horsepower to the engine’s contribution. The power rating for the X3 and X4 M40i for 2002 is 382 HP and 369 lb-ft of torque. The baseline remains the M30i; the unassisted 2.0L four makes up to 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
Visually, the models look spruced. Both get an edited version of the ‘butterfly’ grille that’s been much discussed in the past months, and both get updated headlights and reshaped bumpers. Cabin features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen on the X3, with the X4 getting a couple of 12.3-inch bars for driver and infotainment; the X3 can option the larger layout.
Pricing for the 2022 X3 begins at $44,695. The 2022 X4 starts at $52,795.
