A Utah ranch owned by legendary actor, director and activist Robert Redford appeared on the open market of late. Titled ‘Horse Whisper Ranch’, the property is priced at $4.9 million, and located within miles of the Sundance Resort, the arts-and-recreation area he launched in the 1960s. The name of the ranch references his 1998 blockbuster The Horse Whisperer; the film featured a 12-year-old Scarlet Johansson.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Redford is looking to focus his energy on other properties. “For the last 25 years, my family and I have loved and embraced this ranch as a base for our horse program, running clinics and serving as a home for our many beloved horses,” he said. “Looking ahead, we want to focus on expanding the facilities at our ranch located at Sundance in nearby Provo Canyon.”
Listing information gives a build date of 1914 for the ranch; some of the structures appear to be of that vintage, but new or old all biped residences on the property are of the strictly utilitarian variety, with a 1,500 sq. ft. farmhouse that’s smaller than some of the usage-specific buildings, which include a boathouse and a workshop. Commercial kitchens and service space can also be spotted.
A significant amount of the interior space is given over to horse lifestyle considerations. The buildings include stalls and a hay barn. The land includes a great deal of pasture, and features mountain and water views.
Other properties associated with Redford that have appeared over the past few years include an escapist destination in the Napa Valley hamlet of Saint Helena. Redford and his wife Sibylle, a painter, listed the little estate in late 2018 for $7.5 million, and saw it into their back pages a few months later.
